It remains the service element of my work as Artist in Residence at Bellevue hospital and my waitress position that consistently informs and challenges the themes of my work.
These themes question gender roles and their implied expectations. The use of these preconceived notions, such as laundry being “woman’s work” and a woman’s “inclination for service” acting as a nurse, cook or provider serves as a vehicle for performance. This challenges my viewers to understand the empowerment, not subjugation, of doing these acts.
I also really find myself drawn to the Ballerina and the dance diciplines. I often refrence the language, movement and imagery of dance to connect my abstractions of self doubt, anger and discovery.
